Program Description:
Texas A&M University is a leader in the state and the nation in providing our students with international opportunities. Our faculty and staff are essential to providing students with experiences that challenge their worldview and make them global citizens. One of the ways faculty can facilitate such experiences is by leading faculty-directed programs abroad.

A faculty-led program is an education abroad program where Texas A&M University courses are taught overseas by Texas A&M faculty. These courses are typically taught in English, with the exception of programs that include language acquisition. Students participating in faculty-led programs are provided with an academically enriching experience in the host country, complemented with culturally relevant excursions. Some faculty choose to create a hybrid faculty-led program by combining a Texas A&M course with a host institution course (i.e. exchange or transfer credit). 

Developing a study abroad program, short term (2 to 10 weeks) or semester-long, is a lengthy process that involves early discussions as well as timely completion of a detailed proposal. The proposal deadlines are below. Discussion with the academic department and college should start beforehand for preapproval of the academic content. All faculty-led programs taught abroad require department, college, and Education Abroad approval, so it is best to begin the discussion at the department level.

This Education Abroad Portal and the Faculty-led Program Registration contained within will serve as the repository for items related to your program. The portal registration provides you with an overview of materials and content that you need to review and complete at different stages in program development. Items can be accessed and submitted through the portal and are available to you online before, during, and after your program. 

The portal registration requires specific items at certain phases in the program development process and is designed to organize materials and create a filing system for you and the Education Abroad team.

Please note the form to submit a proposal for a faculty-led program will only be available from within the registration portal. A copy of your approved proposal, syllabus, itinerary, and budget will all be available in the portal.

Step 1: Department and College Support: Faculty wishing to create such a program should meet with the appropriate academic department head and Education Abroad College Liaison. Colleges may have their own deadline for proposal submission.
 
Step 2: Education Abroad offers two service levels for Faculty-led Programs: Standard Service, which is fully supported by the Education Abroad staff; and Limited Service, which is supported primarily by the faculty’s home department and/or college. Each service level comes with a different fee charged to the students.

Please note that some colleges will require faculty to select the standard service level of support and work exclusively with Education Abroad to develop and manage all aspects of your program.

At your first meeting, you will finalize the level of service for your program and your signed agreement will be uploaded to this application.

Step 3: Creating and Submitting a Proposal: Education Abroad College Liaisons and Education Abroad staff can guide faculty in the course proposal process. Faculty are encouraged to visit with Pascale Parker and/or Orié Varner (abroad@tamu.edu) or 979.845.0544 for assistance and resources.

Summer including May and August programs: May 1

Step 4: Once a Proposal is approved by the College: Faculty may start planning programs abroad, working closely with Education Abroad to coordinate logistics, funding, and other administrative processes. Education Abroad staff will initiate contact with the faculty once the approved proposal is sent to our office. This office will provide assistance throughout the many phases of development, implementation, and post-program activities as well as in emergency and crisis situations abroad.
